For our 8 Days 7 Nights trip to Kaohsiung and Taipei, we decided to get a pre-paid mobile data plan at Kaohsiung International Airport so that we can easily contact the tour guides / drivers / hotels / restaurants that we have engaged for our trip.
There are 5 main telecom operators in Taiwan as follows, ranked in terms of their market share:
- Chunghwa Telecom (中華電信)
- Taiwan Mobile (台灣大哥大)
- FarEasTone (遠傳電信)
- Taiwan Star Telecom (台灣之星)
- Asia Pacific Telecom (亞太電信)
The booths for Chunghwa Telecom (中華電信) and Taiwan Mobile (台灣大哥大) are side by side so you can easily compare their prices.
Prices for both companies are actually quite comparable with only slight variations, depending on the plan you selected. We took the 7 Day Plan from Chunghwa Telecom (中華電信) which comes with unlimited data + 150 minutes of local calls at NTD $500 (SGD $22.50). Taiwan Mobile (台灣大哥大) offers the same package at the same price.
Just hand over your passport and a photo ID to the staff for registration and they will help you install the prepaid SIM card into your phone / tablet followed by activation.
The data plan served us very well in keeping us up to date with our friends and relatives in Singapore and communicating with the our tour guides / drivers in both Kaohsiung and Taipei. Coverage was good in even the more remote areas unlike our previous experience in Perth.
